Originally, it just lowered your landline bill. Today, it covers cell phone service and mobile data. The "Free Phone" you see advertised is actually a bonus perk that private companies (like Assurance Wireless or SafeLink) give you to win your business.

The "Laptop" Confusion

Here is where it gets tricky. Lifeline itself pays for the service, not usually the computer.

Income: Your household income is at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.
